I’m back, after a long absence with new twists on some old lessons.
Although I’ve been practicing yoga for 15 years, it wasn’t until revisiting aerial yoga that I pondered certain parallel yet paradoxical lessons I’ve learned in aerial yoga, which apply equally in my professional life as a solo corporate transactional attorney and business owner.
Practicing aerial yoga has taught me:
- We achieve mastery [of poses or legal expertise] through practicing. We learn by doing.
- Doing the work leads to desired results.
- “Muscle memory” is real – each time we practice, the proverbial “IT” gets easier.
- The learning curve is faster than anticipated, which builds confidence.
- We conquer fear by doing, and conquering fear allows us to do more!
- To put myself in uncomfortable positions AND be able to relax and breathe in the poses.
- Breathwork creates internal spaciousness, increases freedom of movement and feelings of euphoria. It’s rather empowering!
- To embrace the fear of feeling uncomfortable in exchange for enhanced strength, flexibility and resilience in yoga and in my professional life. This is growth!
- Strengthening requires core activation. Listen to and trust your gut!
- To ease into uncomfortable poses by deploying abdominal strength and breathwork.
- Improving flexibility requires a combination of exertion and surrender.
- Growth is enhanced by striking a balance between push and pull.
- How to gain strength through softness by listening, trusting and surrendering.
- To unlock my passions, to find joy, to feel a sense of freedom and to do childlike and playful things, like hang upside down in an aerial yoga class, breathe and enjoy it!
Which of these resonates most with you?
